Lost & Found
Lost a Pet?
  • Thoroughly search your property – check under the house, garage and small sheds.
  • Ask your neighbours to check their sheds & garages in case your pet has been accidentally locked inside.
  • Get on foot in the neighbourhood and call your pet – they know your voice which will be very reassuring to them if they are injured & unable to get home.
  • Put flyers in letterboxes around your neighbourhood. Include a description and your contact details.
  • Place a free advert on the national website www.lostpet.co.nz Also search the “found pets” section of their website.
  • Contact local radio stations and ask them to list your lost pet on their petline - The Hits ph 06 759 2460, More FM ph 0800 MORE 932.
  • Contact local vet clinics in case your pet has been found injured.
  • Check the Lost & Found listings in the newspaper.
  • Place an advertisement in the newspaper - Taranaki Daily News ph 06 759 0808, Stratford Press ph 06 765 5471, South Taranaki Star ph 06 278 0630
  • Contact the New Plymouth SPCA ph 06 758 2053 and Hawera SPCA ph 06 278 5605 in case your pet has been taken to either location.
  • Contact your local council to report your lost dog – New Plymouth ph 06 759 6060, Stratford ph 06 765 6099, Hawera ph 0800 111 323.
  • If your pet is microchipped & registered on the NZ Companion Animal Register, contact them on 0800 LOST PET to register them as missing.
  • Use social media – there are many lost & found pet pages on Facebook – NZLostPets, Taranaki Lost and Found Pets, and Lost & Found Pets in Taranaki just to name a few.
Most importantly – don’t give up hope. Keep advertising, searching and calling. Cats have been known to return after many weeks or be found kilometres away from home.
Found a Pet?
  • Have the animal scanned for a microchip at your nearest vet clinic / animal rescue or SPCA.
  • If the animal appears injured or unwell, take it to the nearest vet so that it gets necessary medical attention.
  • Put flyers in letterboxes in the area it was found. Include a description and your contact details.
  • Place a free advert on the national website www.lostpet.co.nz Also search the “lost pets” section of their website.
  • Contact local radio stations and ask them to list the pet on their ‘petline’ - The Hits ph 06 759 2460, More FM ph 0800 MORE 932.
  • Contact local vet clinics in case the pet’s owner has made contact with them.
  • Check the Lost & Found listings in the newspaper.
  • Place an advertisement in the newspaper - Taranaki Daily News ph 06 759 0808, Stratford Press ph 06 765 5471, South Taranaki Star ph 06 278 0630.

  • Use social media – there are many lost & found pet pages on Facebook – NZLostPets, Taranaki Lost and Found Pets, and Lost & Found Pets in Taranaki just to name a few.
  • If you are unable to look after the animal until the owner is found, contact your nearest animal shelter. Animal shelters are bursting at the seams during ‘kitten season’ (approx November through to April), so contact them by phone first to see if they can accommodate.
  • If accommodation at an animal shelter is not available, ask family or friends for their help until the owner is found or accommodation becomes available at the shelter.

Exercise a little caution in the case of a found cat. Often cats believed to be strays, do in fact belong to someone local, are well cared for & dearly loved, but due to their inquisitive nature they wander & go on visiting tours about the neighbourhood.
