Saving Lives, one kitten at a time
About Us
The Scratching Post is operated by the Stratford Companion Animal Assistance Trust, a small Trust independent of any other organisation.
The Stratford Companion Animal Assistance Trust was registered with the Charities Commission in May 2012 (CC47730). We needed an operation base and means to fundraise, so The Scratching Post opened in Stratford in August 2012 and became our presence in the Community.
Our two main objectives are caring for young kittens in need and advocating the need and importance of pet desexing. We concentrate on helping young kittens as they are the most vulnerable due to their age and inexperience. By concentrating on the younger generation we also ensure that they do not contribute to uncontrolled breeding resulting in more homeless cats in our District. Our operation is 100% worked by volunteers. We rely solely on the generosity and energy of supporters in order to carry out the work we do.
The Trustees
Karma Andrews - The idea for the inception and goals of the Trust were sown by my late mother and I am happy to see it come to fruition. I have past experience in animal welfare groups, together with a National Certificates in Animal Industry Services. Chilli and Bugs our 2 felines THINK they rule the house, but I'm pretty sure I gain ranking at dinner time.
Nola Hall - My early years were spent in Taranaki, with some time away in the South Island where I qualified as a Vet Nurse and Rural Animal Technician, including time spent dairy farming. I currently work for a local legal firm, and when not spending my spare time advocating animal welfare issues, enjoy the company of my 4 cats and a few not-very-social goldfish.
Chris Andrews - I have a business background and have had pets all my life; Cats, dogs, goats, chooks, budgies & a card playing cockatiel to name a few. I share my home with 2 cats and 1 wife, though I still miss my best mate pictured.
Margaret Holgate - Born and bred Stratford, I've always lived here and love it. I have a brood of animals on my farmlet including dogs, cats, sheep, horses, pigs and chooks, some of which know how to open front doors and let themselves in! I have been fostering kittens for 10+ years and love watching them transform from the scared little beings they are when they arrive, to confident, well rounded pets when they're ready for rehoming.
The late Karen Peters - Being born and educated in Stratford, she worked in the province in Chartered Accountancy for over 35 years. She was the toddler that ran up to dogs tied to parking meters and hugged them, and was also the toddler that wore a harness and lead herself! She had been associated with animal welfare organisations for many years, lending a hand whenever she could.
